looking for internship/job in bioinformatics/biotech company

I have got my Ph.D in Cell and Developmental Biology from University of Illinois in 2008. I am currently working on my MS degree in bioinformatics, which is expected to be completed in this December.

I believe that my scientific background, my interpersonal skills and business knowledge will make me a good fit for your company. The attached resume details the specifics of my experience and accomplishments. In summary, my credentials include:

* 12 year's extensive research experience in developmental biology, cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, genetics, toxicology, physiology and evolution (bioinformatics)

* Diverse skills in biology, bioinformatics, programming and statistics through course studies

* Good interpersonal skills developed during my 4-years experience as a leader of a charitable organization

* Basic business knowledge through a Certificate program in Entrepreneurship and Management

Please contact me if you have an opening, Thanks a lot!

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

1. My bioinformatics MS thesis topic: the evolution of RNA molecules (2008~present)

My thesis is focusing on the evolution of RNA molecules. I apply my coding skills and statistical techniques to this research. My final goal is to construct a phylogenetic tree of different RNA molecules and reveal the evolution of these molecules. The result will not only reveal the evolutionary relationship among different RNA molecules, but also identify the crucial structural and functional components in the evolution of early life.

2. Axon guidance of olfactory receptor neuron and antennal lobe development in Drosophila (2004~2008)

Genetic screen for identifying genes involved in olfactory axon guidance. To identify molecules involved in the axon targeting and antennal lobe development, I carried out a misexpression screen and found some genes involved in the olfactory system development.

Molecular biology study of the function of AKAP200 in the olfactory development in Drosophila. By application of over-expression, gene knockout and RNAi techniques, I found that AKAP200 gene is involved in multiple processes in the olfactory receptor axon projection.

3. Molecular Physiological study of Estrogen and its role in male reproductive tract (2002~2004)

My work focused on exploring how estrogen regulates the gene expression in the male reproductive tract. I treated the animals with estrogenic and antiestrogenic chemicals and checked the expression of some genes that encode for ion channels and receptors by real-time PCR.

4. Identification of GABAergic System on Rat Spermatozoa (2001~2002)
My research work was to find out what kinds of GABAergic system exist in rat spermatozoa and further identify the role they play in rat spermatozoa by using molecular and cellular methods. I carried out 5’-RACE to sequence the genes that codes for isoforms of GABA receptors in rat testis, which is different from that of in Central Nervous System.

5. My Zoology MS thesis research concerns on the relationship between Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) and Estrogen Receptor (ER) gene polymorphism and human susceptibility to some diseases (1998~2001)
I used Allele-Specific PCR (AS-PCR) and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) to detect AHR and ER gene polymorphism in health population and patients. My research showed that there were correlations between AHR and ER gene polymorphisms and some kinds of leukemia, and significant differences were identified in AHR and ER gene polymorphism distributions among different ethnic groups.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Teaching bottomistant, Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, University of Illinois, Urbana

• Taught laboratory and discussion sections, my duties included developing exam questions, demonstrating the experiment procedures, leading discussions, evaluating students’ performance, grading and hosting office hours
• Served as liaison among lecturers, course coordinators and the students

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

2005~2008 Chair of OCEF-UIUC The Overseas China Education Foundation (OCEF) is a volunteer-based IRS-501(c) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the education in rural areas in China. I joined the OCEF in 2005, and founded a branch, called OCEF-UIUC volunteer group, at University of Illinois in the Jan. 2006.

In 2008-2009, OCEF-UIUC is awarded University of Illinois TIS Outstanding Organization Award because of our excellent work in promoting cultural education and cross-cultural communication.

Since Feb 2009, I am board member and Chair of Local Branch Management Committee of OCEF, dedicating to OCEF local branch development all over the United States.

In Nov 2009, as leader of the OCEF team, I helped OCEF to win the 1st place in America’s Giving Challenge.
